Book Covers That Got Away

I love this piece in this past Sunday’s New York Times Book Review on book covers from the cutting room floor. It’s always fascinating to me to see the original design concepts of popular titles that have become recognizable by their covers.

  1. Wall Street Journal featured an article some months past on the original covers
for “Girl with Dragon Tattoo.” They were all very different and it is easy to see how a book’s cover can catapult a volume. Consider this: Mickey Spillane, a virtual unknown, sold millions after the infamous ORIGINAL cover showing a woman unzipping appeared; Of the top ten selling books of the century, Spillane sold seven by the mid-Fifties.

  2. Thanks for the info, Jack! I immediately went in search of the WSJ article (and the original Spillane cover). Very interesting on both counts!
