Sad news in the world of literature today. According to the New York Times, the great John Updike has passed away at the age of 76.
Updike, a resident of Beverly Farms, Mass., died of lung cancer, according to a statement from his publisher, Alfred A. Knopf.

At age 64, there is indeed something snow-capped and oddly angelic about Updike; he seems to hover over the contemporary literary scene like an apparition from another era, the last great American man of letters.
And sadly, we have lost “the last great American man of letters.”
