In Gwendolen Gross’s third novel, THE OTHER MOTHER, she explores the line between the stay-at-home mom and the working mother. In her dark tale, this line is wider and more prominent when it is drawn between her two protagonists Thea and Amanda. Thea is a stay-at-home mom who lives in the same town in which she was raised. Her new neighbor is Amanda, a successful New York book editor. Amanda and her lawyer husband are expecting their first child and Amanda is determined not to alter her professional life with the addition of a child. Gross accurately portrays both sides of this complex story with alternating points-of-view. She creates a moving and vivid portrait of the complexities that arise when faced with a difficult decision. The novel was a complete and captivating story with beautiful prose.
